Madness At The Polls

AP Top 25Can anyone tell me why we have polls that come out prior to the season?  Yeah, I know we need something to talk about, but seriously.  No one really knows how the team is going to perform.  Every year there are several teams that are ranked far too high.  This year Oklahoma, my very own team, was ranked too high.  Yes, they played great last year.  Yes, they have the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.  But there are major holes.  The offensive line is full of new guys.  The wide receivers are still yet to prove themselves.  But going into the start of the season they were ranked #3.  Ohio State is another team that I swear consistently is overrated.  This year they started at #6.  They played Navy.  NAVY for crying out loud!  They barely made it past them!  What about all the teams that play high school caliber teams for the first FOUR weeks?  How do they deserve to be ranked high?

Now I’m not saying that these teams are bad.  I’m not saying that you can’t scrape by occasionally and not be the best team.  What I am saying is that I cannot find a reason to rank teams this early.  It’s all guessing.  Yeah, some of the voters may have seen them play some scrimmages.  So what?  They are playing their own team!  The defense has seen all these plays from the offense a couple times already!  They can’t even beat up on the QB!  I just don’t see that there is any merit to ranking teams so soon.  Let’s say that Oklahoma this year ends up losing several more games and at the end we all agree that they shouldn’t have been anywhere near #3.  BYU still gets credit for beating the #3 team!  I think the polls shouldn’t come out until later.  There isn’t much that the BCS seems to do right (but it’s the system we have so…), but I love that they wait until week eight before their polls come out.  Why not wait until week eight?  Even week four would be good!  But even then several teams still haven’t played a team over Ju-Co level.

Polls are worthless this early.  They do nothing but inflate teams and their strength of schedule.  It’s like steroids.  They make you huge for a little while and then when the truth finally comes out its way too late and everyone else sits around discussing how crappy the situation is.  That’s my two cents.  You hear me, AP, ESPN, and Coaches?  Didn’t think so.

The Top 10 x 4

Ok so it is Tuesday and I just realized that I haven’t post the polls for this week yet!  Ahh!  I am falling behind!  I know, I know.  It’s terrible of me but you will just have to forgive me and move on.  Ok here is what we have so far.  Not much happened except that there is very little chance that we won’t have 2 of the top 3 teams at the moment in the championship game (at least that’s how I see it).  It is possible, but a lot has to happen for someone else (namely Oklahoma, Texas Tech, USC, Oklahoma State) to get in.  So here we go.

BCS Top 10
1. Texas
2. Alabama
3. Penn State
4. Oklahoma

Brook James Top 10
1. Texas (they are on top right now, but have show weakness to both OU and OSU – watch out for TTU)
2. Alabama (continue to be strong but still have at least 2 big games left)
3. Penn State (should thank the polls for putting them this high because while undefeated still haven’t done much)
4. Oklahoma (defense continues to look weak while offense continues to look great)
5. Georgia (finally looked like a team that should be in the top 10)
6. Texas Tech (has yet to really do anything other than put up points…are they worthy?)
7. Oklahoma State (lost to the #1 and made Missouri look like they were playing 8 man football)
8. Florida (one good win…not sure they are worthy of the spot but no one else has played anyone)
9. USC (could you have a weaker schedule in a “major conference”…what a joke…give the Rose Bowl to another conference!)
10. Boise State (because Utah doesn’t deserve it)

The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  No, I am absolutely not singing Christmas songs early (if you know me you already know how absurd that thought actually is!) and maybe we will all get lucky and the music people will forget that it’s Christmas time and we can continue with Christmas but just minus the really bad cheesy songs…but that’s just me.  Anyway.  I digress.  You may notice that I haven’t put a picture on this blog entry (at least not at the top).  I am just seeing if I can trick some of those girls that tune me out when I say football will get this far!  Ha.  Ok.  We are through week 8 of the college football year!  Woo hoo!  I’m not sure I am necessarily cheering for the BCS that made its 2008 debut, but still!  More polls!  We all love hearing someone else’s opinion and then disagreeing with it!  You know you do!  That’s the whole point isn’t it?  No?  Hmm…  Maybe I’m just weird.  Ok.  Onward.

This looks as if it could be one of those years that a 1 loss team makes it to the big game.  I’m not necessarily making a prediction that I’m willing to stake my paycheck on…well, I guess I can pretty much do that with any prediction considering I’m not getting a paycheck at the moment.  Anyway, there are several really good teams with 1 loss.  There are also still a few good teams without losses.  Good for them.  I hope they lose.  Especially Texas.  I hate that team.  USC made a great showing, but I have to agree with many of you in that they are in an incredibly awful conference and they lost to a not-so-hot team of Beavers.  OU, as much as I love them, has some serious special teams issues as well as a depleted defense and a kicker who needs to be inside 35 yards not to mention that I’m not sure they filled Stoops in on the fact that he can challenge calls.  But please don’t get me wrong, I still love Stoops, the Sooners are still my boys, and I will continue to root for them good or bad!  OSU is lighting it up still!  I talked to one Cowboy fan on his way to a game a few weeks ago and this fan who shall remain nameless (cough…Rick Teague…cough) was just waiting for the Poke Choke.  Well, I guess this week we will find out what they are really made of.  No more soft teams (And yes I know they played Missouri.  They don’t count as a good team.  They haven’t done ANYTHING and Chase Daniels will NOT win the Heisman…ever.)  Alabama still has a tough conference.  Good luck.  Penn State, well, their conference sucks too.  Ok.  Enough babbling, Brook (ha…get it?  Babbling Brook?  As in my name?  Just kidding.  Crappy joke.), on to the polls, including the BCS too.

Don’t forget to let me know what you think!

6. Florida (finally beat a good team)
7. Texas Tech (unbeaten but hasn’t played a soul)
8. LSU (lost to a good team but has played well)
9. USC (still haven’t beaten a good team…no Ohio State and Oregon don’t count and lost to terrible one)
10. Utah (because Georgia and Ohio State suck and don’t deserve to be in the top 10)

Post Red River Rivalry Top 10

Well, it saddens me this week to do a Top 10 post.  Unfortunately the weekend’s events didn’t favor my team like I had hoped.  Don’t get me wrong.  All hope is NOT lost.  They still have a shot although it is much smaller.  So, with all the mix ups again, how do you agree with the new polls?  Will we have another year of 14 million #1 teams losing again?

5 Weeks Of Craziness!

So we have now had 5 weeks of this madness we call college football!  It’s been rather odd several times.  Teams we all thought had very little chance of losing when we started out have failed miserably.  Teams that weren’t supposed to be that good are now climbing the charts!  Crazy I tell ya!  So here are the new polls and my take as well!

As for me, I would like to say congrats to the SEC and Big 12 for not sucking so far.  We have barely even gotten to conference play and big teams are dropping like flies (because apparently flies drop).  Let’s all take a moment and welcome the OSU Cowboys to the Top 25!  It’s been a little while and we want to make them feel welcome…that is until they meet OU (’cause then I don’t want them to feel welcome anymore)!  Also, just a warning, I really have a problem putting 1 loss teams ahead of undefeated teams that are truly holding their own, but sometimes it just happens.

Week 4

So another week of football has gone by.  I wasn’t as excited about this past weekend because my boys had a bye, but there was still some good football.  Before I get to the Top 10 this week, I have a couple questions for you.

1. Will the West Virginia coach (that was their savior at the end of last season) still have a job by the end of the season?  While we’re at it, will he make it through the whole season?

2. Is there really a defense in the Big 12 that can stop a good passing attack?  (Don’t get me wrong, I love my Sooners, but they have been rather suspect in the secondary for the last several years.)

3. Is East Carolina done?

4. If OU and Georgia run the board, will USC get left out of the title game with a weak strength of schedule?

Ok.  Now on to the Top 10.

Ok, so I am ready to give Georgia some props.  They finally looked like a team that was worthy of a decent ranking last weekend.  But don’t get me wrong.  I only said some.  It was Arizona State for cryin’ out loud.  I guess this weekend we will really see how good they are.

Brook’s Top 10
1. USC
2. Oklahoma
3. Florida
4. LSU
5. Missouri
6. Georgia
7. Alabama
8. Wisconsin
9. BYU
10. Texas

Yes I know that the bottom side of this changed dramatically, but I don’t care.  Texas still hasn’t played a college team (and I hate UT).  So there you have it.  Deal with it.  Bring on the thoughts!

Week 1

Week 3 (I Know! Already!)

It’s crazy how time flies when you are having fun.  And yes, I know it seems like just yesterday that we finally kicked off the most… wonderful time… of the year (as sung to some goofy Christmas tune)… AKA college football season!  But as stated before, time flies when you are entirely too excited about college football (with the exception of the rest of the year when time seems to stand still because we are entirely too excited about the season to come).  And we have now made it through week 3 and the polls (which in my opinion don’t really mean squat and probably shouldn’t even come out until later in the year, like week 8 or something) so here are the newly updated polls with the addition of my own personal version of the Top 10!  Enjoy and tell me what you think!

Ah, Week 1 Polls!

And they are here!  The start of the craziest process in all of sports!  Don’t ask me how it works because it doesn’t make any sense to me either in the end.  Ok, so there were a few upsets.  Lots of blowouts.  Give me your thoughts?  Are the polls good at the moment?  Do we have the right teams on top?

It Is Finally Here!

Well, the new college football season has finally begun!  It has been a long time since the bowl games from last season and I am so pumped that I almost got up early this morning because I was so excited about it!  So it is here.  Football is on.  We were all concerned with what we would watch when the Olympics ended, but the answer has come!  COLLEGE FOOTBALL!  Woo!  Only problem is my boys are on pay-per-view.  What’s with that?  I don’t live in Sooner country.  I can’t just call a bunch of people to come over with a dollar and buy the game.  No.  I have to convince my wife its a good investment.  But she is an OSU fan.  And her team is on TV.  Seriously?  Wow.

So here’s the deal.  I’m gonna post the top 10 for the week.  You tell me what you think.  Is it right?  Who should be where?
