Made In 1980

Seeing as today is my birthday I thought I would give you a glimpse of 1980 as I see it!  I know there are so many more pictures and things I would add to this list, but the longer I sit here and do this the more pictures I add.  I will never be able to finish if I don’t just cut it off now.  So here you go.  I Love The ’80!

Countdown To Retirement

Well, we are officially less than 24 hours away from my 30th birthday.  That’s crazy!  I don’t feel old enough to be 30!  (We all know I don’t act it.)  I have been told that your body doesn’t build new muscles after 30.  I’m not sure I believe that, but I guess I better do a lot of sit-ups and pushups today just in case!  My 20s were great.  I had a blast.  A lot happened in the past decade.  These are just a few of the highlights.

  • Did the college thing.  Well, most of the college thing.  For longer than most do the college thing.
  • Moved to Texas and solidified the fact that I am not a Texan.
  • Became a pastor.
  • Bought a Jeep Wrangler.
  • Switched from Windows to Mac.  Never looking back.
  • Met the girl of my dreams.  Broke up with her.
  • Re-met the girl of my dreams.  Got a 2nd chance.
  • Married her.
  • Moved to California.
  • Lived at the beach.
  • Had Jessika Kaye James.

Like I said there are many more.  But now I have to start looking forward.  I apparently have to be an adult.  But now that I am about to be over the hill, I will have to come up with new things to accomplish.  I’m thinking things like the following:

  • Bingo
  • Reading The Newspaper
  • Getting confused with this new-fangled cellular phone
  • Hip replacement
  • Dentures
  • Daily Crosswords
  • Pick out a headstone and start carving my eugoogoly

That seems like a good list to get started on.  But I think I’ll wait to start on it until after I’ve had my morning coffee and senior citizen discounted grandslam breakfast from Denny’s at 4:15 AM.  So until then I guess I’ll enjoy the last day of my 20s.

PS – for those of you that are planning on calling me on my birthday, please do it earlier in the day.  I will be switching to my new “old man” bedtime of 6:25 PM starting Day 1 as well as adopting my new speed limit so don’t expect me early!

Goodbye Birthday

Well, the birthday has come and past.  Yeah that’s right.  The last one of my 20′s is now gone.  Next year starts a new decade.  But we did celebrate it a little more than normal so that’s fun.  First of all, thank you to everyone who wished me happy birthday here, on Twitter and on Facebook!  Thank you even to those of you that didn’t mean it but just said it because you are supposed to.  All of you rock my world!

Despite the original disappointment that started off my birthday week with the bummer fact that Aerosmith and ZZ Top would not be joining us for their concert, we moved on and still had a great week.  We had dinner with friends, had 2 Royal Red Robin gourmet burgers (yes I have gained weight this week), a night of steaks (seriously, I did put some weight back on), kayaked, and had the baby’s first concert!  Saturday KK surprised me with a kayaking trip out in the Newport Beach (or Balboa, not sure what it is actually called) harbor.  We rented the kayak for an hour in the warm sun and made a trip around Lido island in less than an hour and got to see some seals (or sea lions…I don’t know the difference) out in the wild.  That was really cool.  Since my wife is preggo, I let her do all the work and I just sat there and took in the sights…yet my arms are pretty sore today.  Hmmm.

So after a great Thursday, Friday and Saturday (wow, I sound like Shanna…well maybe not that bad) of celebrating my birthday we topped it all off with the Def Leppard concert on Sunday night!  That was amazing!  We missed Cheap Trick…well we heard them as we were walking… but got to see Poison open for Def Leppard and then watched the British band rock out 80′s style!  It was so great!  Not to mention that we got in for free too (thank you Live Nation)!  Poison was pretty good.  They had plenty of pyrotechnics and their drummer had plenty of stick tricks.  Personally, I think he was just showing off because he knew the Def Leppard drummer can’t match that.

Def Leppard

So after Brett Michaels thanked the crowd for about the 5th time, it was finally time for Def Leppard!  The roadies came out and completely changed the stage up (which was insane!) and got everything ready.  Then Def  Leppard came out to rock our worlds with a huge 3 piece LED screen, awesome lights, and very well done video.  Within the first 4 songs, they had played 3 off their new album and I was bummed.  But, then they kicked it into overdrive and rocked out all their best hits from the past 20 years!  I couldn’t have asked for a better set list!  Needless to say it was awesome!  Pour Some Sugar On Me, Photograph, Hysteria, Two Steps Behind, and on and on they went until they did the best encore I have ever seen!  Let’s Get Rocked was the best of the night!  Amazing song to end my birthday week with.

So the 29th birthday has come and gone.  Until next year!

Happy Birthday To Me

The Best Birthday Present EverYup.  It’s my birthday!  Good times.  If only it was filled with Transformers, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, and LEGOs like it used to be.  That would be great wouldn’t it?  We could sit around and have wars.  Then once your team was all dead you could play War, the card game, work on the Rubix Cube, or go build a fort out of anything and everything.  But I guess times change and people expect us to grow up.  Ha.  Yeah right!  You all can do your growing up thing and I’ll go build a fort out of LEGOs or my Transformers and Micro Machines to live in!

But I guess part of us does grow up.  This is my last birthday before I turn 30.  Wow.  I’m really glad I don’t feel old enough to be 30.  I hope I don’t next year either.  This also marks my last birthday prior to children.  Not really sure how that’s gonna affect my birthday, but I would be stupid to assume that it wouldn’t.  Wait!  Maybe that means I get an extra gift from the kid too!  Of course then they will start making macaroni pictures in Sunday School and that will be my birthday gift.  Those are super sweet and cute and all those other girl words that tend to follow super.  It just will be different.

So here’s to 28 completed years of life.  Bring on the next one!  I have a feeling it will be a very eventful one.

PS – Comments on the blog are a great birthday present for those of you that weren’t gonna buy me something!

The Birthday Gift

Monty Python's SpamalotGone are the days that we have all our friends over to our house or to Chuck E. Cheese’s for a birthday party where they all bring numerous gifts of G.I. Joe’s, Transformers, LEGOs, and MicroMachines.  That’s too bad.  That would be amazing!  But, apparently as we get older we don’t do those things any more.  Yeah, we still get all our friends together and have cake or some other sort of dessert, but we generally just go to a restaurant or do something else that our younger selves would have been bored out of their minds doing.  And with this change you start having to make decisions about your birthday gifts instead of just which present do I open first.

Well, my birthday is coming up next week and I am having to make one of those decisions.  I am struggling with it right now so I need your help.  For about the same price I have a couple options that I haven’t been able to choose between.

  1. Spamalot – For those of you that don’t know what Spamalot is let me tell you that it is the best thing to come out of Broadway in the past…well…ever!  The guys of Monty Python have created a Broadway show out of the movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail.  I actually went to see it last year and I know from experience that it is insanely funny and amazing.
  2. CD/MP3/Aux Player for my Jeep – This is not too difficult to explain.  Everyone has one.  Except me.  My Jeep has a cassette player and it no longer works.  Bummer.  So I have the radio and that is it.  It is illegal (I believe) to have both earbuds in while driving so I need to do something, right?

Both of these options have immediate gratification, but Spamalot has the gratification for the night (and then the lasting memory in my head).  The CD player will be great to have in the car for a long time coming.  Spamalot will be much better over the course of a shorter period of time while the CD player will be good for a longer period.

So you tell me!  Which one do I choose!?

08-28-80

So the Chinese believe that 8′s are a symbol of prosperity or good luck or something like that.  I really don’t remember.  Something to do with having the Olympics on 08-08-08.  Anyway, my birthday is tomorrow.  It is 08-28-08.  Is that the same?  I bet the Chinese would like me.
